I think it’s great that the Republicans are stepping forward and making a decision to ban legal gay marriage1. This is a step in the right direction — it doesn’t actually criminalize the act of two same sex individuals deciding to form a contractual union, what it does it it prevents them from getting the State’s blessing. Good going!
I can only hope that Bush and friends will go one step further and ban straight marriage, too. I believe that these social bans aren’t making criminals, they’re actually just forcing people to create contracts outside of government. Heterosexual marriages would be far better off without the acceptance of the State. We don’t want the State’s sanctions, we want our union’s sanctity. Marriage has nothing to do with the State, so a banning of all marriages makes good sense.
In fact, I think it should just be taken even further than just banning gay and straight marriages; what do you think of just banning all contracts that give preferential treatment under the law for a select group? No need for any licensing of any group — let the medical profession be unlicensed by the State and we’ll see more doctors to choose from, with lower prices all around. Get rid of government licensing of the radio spectrum so that we all can use the airwaves freely, equally and equitably for our communities. Let’s create legal bans on all State-licensing, and we’ll go back to the days when the only thing that matters is what I wanted, what you wanted, and our ability to get what we both want or not deal with one another any more.
I like that idea as much as I like the ban on all marriage licensing. By removing the State from your marriage you create an atmosphere where both parties in the union have to make sure their own needs are met. We would like not see so many hopeless relationships end up in marriage, and we’d also see more people thinking before they mate with one another to consider the ramifications of their own actions. We’d see people paying huge penalties when they created a union without some sort of agreement; this will let the next generation see the need to make sure their “true love” is both truthful and someone to love.
Keep the bans on licensed unions coming!
